Shows & Sales
The Shetland Sheep Society runs five showcase events, including the National, where sheep are shown and then sold at auction. Most of these events also include fleece, sheepskin and craft competitions. They are judged by approved Shetland judges.
There are many large and smaller events, including county shows, that have Shetland sheep classes and many also have wool and craft displays. The show organisers arrange the judges in liaison with the Society, which puts forward suggestions for approved Shetland judges.
There are local shows and smallholder events that have mixed primitive breed classes that include Shetland sheep.
Finally, there are several major fibre and craft events where the Shetland Sheep Society is represented at its own breed stand with displays and demonstrations in wool crafts.
Each year there is a Flock Competition won by the member who accumulates the most points from showing their sheep.
The Champion sheep from 16 selected shows also qualify for the five-yearly Champion of Champions competition, to be held next in 2020.
